ABOUT HAJ
Associate Professor Dr. Habibah Ab Jalil is an academic at the Foundations of Education Department, Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and working with UPM since 2000. An instructor for courses related to information and communication technology (ICT) in education for graduate and undergraduate students. She holds a Bachelor of Science with Education (Hons) majoring in Physics (1997), a Master of Science (Physics Communications) UPM (2001) and a doctorate from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (2007) at the age of 34.
Early involvement as an academic, she was actively involved in the multimedia production for educational courseware development and training and become a facilitator for multimedia production workshops since 1996 in CyberCreative Laboratory (CCL) and Department of Physics, Faculty of Science UPM until 2002. Next, she then moved to another important area of ICT in Education which specializing the area of Online Learning through her doctoral study. In particular, she studied the nature of teaching and learning via Learning Management System (LMS) in Higher Education context from the sociocultural perspective. Exploring the process of teaching and learning through online interaction has become her passion.
She was invited as a speaker in one of the Economic and Social Research Council / Worldwide Universities Network (ESRC / WUN) Research Seminar series entitled 'Researching Dialogue and Communities of Enquiry in E-learning in HE’ during her study in the UK. Results from the seminar series, a book has been produced titled 'The Sage Handbook of E-learning Research' (2007) and she infused the conception of 'teaching' in a virtual environment called 'teaching as assisting others' performance’ and was quoted in one of the chapter.
At international level, she is a member of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), was the Associate Member of Association for Learning Technology, ALT (UK based), was a Junior member of International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), was a member of Global Learn Asia Pacific 2011, International Society of the Learning Sciences, and Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE).
At national level, she was a member of the Malaysian Public Universities e-Learning Council or ‘Majlis e-Pembelajaran IPTA Malaysia’ (MEIPTA) representing UPM and a member of Malaysian Association for Mobile Learning. At University level, she was the initiator of 'Putra Future Classroom' (PFC) and the Coordinator of PFC at the faculty. She was also a Coordinator and Associate Fellow of Teaching and Learning Innovation Division, Centre for Academic Development (CADe), UPM, particularly she involved in coordination of university’s programs and research related to LMS.
Her interest towards Science and Education, including in giving awareness to young children and University students of the importance of Astronomy are proven through various voluntary work in the area. She leads 8 research projects and working together with more than 16 other research projects within the last 10 years and won 2 gold medals. She involved in various research project including on technology-based research (currently on Massive Open Online Courses), Educational Management Information System (EMIS) innovations, Math/Science Education, disadvantages children, Student-centered Learning, Students’ Soft-skill in Higher Education, Organization Development, and Assessment. She is actively involved in both undergraduate and post-graduate student research in the Faculty. She involved in developing the e-learning policies at university and national level. She has already published several book chapters, a book, articles in both local and international journals and conferences which are related to her field of expertise.
